Although the blog is for Astrology, I ventured away for this post to discuss how and why the foods that are grown from genetically modified seed are not being labeled as such.
The labeling of genetically modified (gmo) food products and ingredients was on the voting ballot in California as Proposition 37. The campaign to have gmo’s labeled has been an uphill struggle for a number of years. Not only to convince the public of its importance, but also because of the enormous amount of money the corporations have to convince people to vote no to the gmo labeling law.
It seems that having $46 million to buy tv air time for commercials can convince people of almost anything, irregardless of the truth. Their ads stated that labeling gmo products will increase the price of food one or two hundred dollars a year per family which amounts to a couple billion dollars. The U.K. has been labeling gmo food products for a decade without effecting prices.

They also accused those who want the gmo’s listed on the labels, of scaremongering the public into believing gmo products are different from conventional and are unsafe to consume. However, since they haven’t been properly studied through the trial process, it only makes sense to avoid ingesting them as much as possible.
The biotech manufacturers have asserted that the foods grown from gmo seed is equivalent to foods grown from conventional, time-tested seed that has never been mingled with any other ‘different’ species other than vegetation. This policy that the foods are the same was put into place at the FDA by a person who works for a biotech gmo food corporation of which the USDA is also affiliated.
Funds from all over flowed in giving support in favor of Prop 37 of about $8.5 million and in opposition of the bill tallied $45.7 million. Largest contributors in support of not labeling were Monsanto ($8 million) and DuPont ($5.4 million) followed by PepsiCo, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, Dow, Bayer, and a host of other primarily corporate entities.
Although the bill did not pass with a vote of 53% to 47%, the campaign has increased consumer awareness of GMOs. There are methods to implement to h-elp us stay clear of these bio-teched foods.
- Know the product stickers:
- Stay informed updating your knowledge with the latest gmo news on occasion.
- Eat organic – any product that carries the organic seal can not ntain GMOs.
- Grow a vegetable garden.
- Know what the numbers on produce stickers mean in general:
- 4 digits (most common) – conventionally farmed and likely subjected to herbicides and/or pesticides.
- 5 digits beginning with 9 – organic certified, no GMOs, pesticides or herbicides.
- 5 digits beginning with 8 – conventionally farmed and GMO, almost certainly subjected to herbicides and pesticide.
We not only vote at the ballot box, we also vote by what we purchase as it reflects what we are supporting. It is healthier for all consumers to make the effort to alter the choices we make when shopping for groceries. This link opens in a new tab so you stay in WordPress.
